Starting a New Business? Here Are 10 Things You Need to Prepare!

Written by Andrew Turner

It might sound easy, but starting a small business is no small matter. There are so many things to consider, but even with the many challenges and sacrifices that confront small business owners, most would say they’d do it all over again because of the rewards and excitement. So, if you’ve decided to tread the small business path and set up one of your own, here are some hints and tips to get you started on the road to success:

1. Devise a Business Plan

A business plan that is written down should include your personal goals and projected results and one of the best ways to keep your business on track. For instance, if your company makes $80,000 profit, but you live in Sydney or Melbourne where the cost of living is high, and if you have a family, a mortgage – plus saving for your retirement,  that might not be enough to cover you. A written plan will help you get your ideas set in concrete terms so you can identify places to change the business model if it becomes necessary.

2. Understand Your Market and Focus on the Customer

Many successful companies aren’t first on the market and also don’t have the best service or product offerings, but what they do have is the ability to master the art of sales and marketing. Do your research into the psychographics as well as the demographics of the customers you want to be targeting and get a good grasp of their buying habits. Whatever you do, don’t ignore social media. Do some research and find out what your competitors’ customers are saying about them while also talking to the managers of businesses similar to yours.

3. Create a Growth Story

If you can do it, it’s a great idea to start small and fund your startup. If you have a healthy online savings account then it’s a good idea to use part of it, because then you’ll have a growth story to tell when you apply for a business loan or further funding in the future. Perhaps try to offer your product or service in smaller bites so you can get some experience and pulling power.

4. Understand Your Available Time, Skills and Strengths

You’ll need to know when to hire professionals such as an accountant, insurance agency, lawyer, web page designer or other specialists and when to get help with your marketing. Hiring experts can be a good exercise in itself because it will give you management experience.

5. Call on Experienced Advisors

You can’t do it all on your own. Starting and growing a business is not an easy task – more than half fail within five years – so there will come a time when you need support. This way you can gain from the experience of others. You can’t be expected to have all the experience and knowledge as a novice business owner.

6. Find a Mentor

Check out this link to find a face-to-face mentor near you. There are a lot of free small business workshops often offered in Australia, but also try some webinars, and templates that focus on helping new startups to succeed and grow their small businesses.

7. Send a Powerful Message

It’s often called a ‘value proposition’, but you need to ask yourself if you are solving a customer need. Moreover, will they pay for it?  Another good question is: ‘Why will my business be financially and operationally successful?’ Check out these Budget and finance tips.

8. Grasp the Figures

While you’ll be making many decisions spontaneously, you need to have a good understanding of your sales, profits, gross margins, cash flow, and the metrics associated with your enterprise. If you grasp the figures, it will help you to make the right decisions. Keep an eye out for ways of cutting costs such as social media and email marketing, which is much more economical than the paying for newspaper or other forms of advertising.

9. There Aren’t Any Entitlements

You need to fully understand that to start up your own business means hard work and sacrifice. You might not get a holiday for years, and all your money will probably be tied up in the business. However, here in Australia there are government grants and other forms of assistance available so check it out.

10. Be Passionate About Your Business

While founding a small business can be a lonely venture, and you won’t have enough time in one day to get things done, being passionate about what you’re doing can give you more energy. Without passion, your business life will be much harder whether you’re in a successful phase or a down period.

These are 10 simple ways that you can start your small business journey on the right track. By using the useful resources around, not being afraid to ask for help and keeping your finances organised, you will off to a winning start!
