Balance is essential in every aspect of our lives. Whether you’re managing your work/life balance, your fitness/watching TV balance, and, most importantly, the PR balance. The PR balance the attempt of managing the public’s outlook on your company or brand.
Anything that happens with your company, whether you experience a huge oil leak or releasing a new product, needs to be handled in such a way that benefits everyone. It’s all about drawing in and highlighting the positives. It’s all about giving the public the right information while maintaining a sense of privacy.
Today, we’ll explore three ways you can master this balancing act, enabling you to stay ahead of your game and excel in ways you never thought were possible.
Master Communication
As a PR manager, communication is your only weapon. However, it’s also the most effective. This relates to you and your clients, the press, the public and everybody else in between.
When speaking to your clients, you need to be completely sure that you know exactly what they want from you. You need to be asking questions, and you need to be taking notes to know the exact role that you’re going to be fulfilling.
When talking to or creating releases for the press, you need to ensure that every word you say or write has a meaning and is purposeful. In many cases, you may not be face-to-face with the person or organisation that you’re trying to communicate with, which means it’s even more important to invest the right amount of time in creating your press releases.
Even down to the little details such as proofreading and editing. If you’ve released a statement from your client for newspapers and media outlets that is full of mistakes, that’s going to reflect awfully on you and your client. In the world of PR, every single detail matters.
Master Patience
Not everything will happen overnight. Some processes and PR strategies can take weeks, and even months, to manifest and develop into what you want them to be. You need to be patient, but it’s also vital that you teach your clients that patience is essential.
In some situations, your client may be so caught up in an issue or event that they fail to see why your strategy would work or how it will work.
During times like these, you must persist to explain your strategy in a way that they will understand. The strategy may need adapting to suit your client’s needs, and leeway is acceptable, but the overall goal must be maintained.
Peter J. Sander, the PR manager for Big Assignments, continues, “Not everybody understands everything. If you’re working for a stubborn client who fails to see the end goal, it’s vital that you change the way you’re communicating to a way that they’ll understand. Be patient and understanding, setting your goals together, rather than working alone. Only through teamwork can you reach what you set out to do.”
Reassess, Define and Progress
Evaluation and analysis are your final tools for mastering the PR balance. If you’ve already implemented part of a PR campaign, analyse the feedback to see whether it was successful or not. If it wasn’t, you’re probably going to need to re-evaluate the rest of your strategy.
Of course, this can be time-consuming and can cost more money that you may not have, but it’s important to get a PR strategy right. If you don’t’, the result could be catastrophic for you and your client.
Always remember to keep your end goal in mind and do whatever you need to do to make it happen.
